TOM BENTON

MAVERICK INNOVATION CENTER AT CMU

Vocational History:  Financial services industry (35) Thirty-five years. Started employment with First National Banks owned by George B McKinley and moved to United Bank in 1990.  This entity evolved through acquisitions to Norwest and subsequently Wells Fargo.  Tom managed the business banking functions during the acquisition of the Bank of Grand Junction and the Downtown location.  During these years he was fortunate to work with a number of very bright and entrepreneurial business owners. Most of these businesses were able to survive in tough economic times, and then thrive in good times. In 2015 Tom retired from the financial services sector and joined CMU to support the Maverick Innovation Center. The focus of the Innovation Center has been to assist students in the development of new ideas and business interests.


Secondary vocational interests:  Farming and commercial real estate leasing and investment management for a number of years.

Tom has served as a board member and Chairman of a number of nonprofit agencies in the Grand Valley.  Some of these entities include:

United Way of Mesa County
Western Colorado Council of Boy Scouts
Chamber of Commerce Livestock Marketing Council
Grand Valley Power.

LUNCHEON HIGHLIGHTS

Native of Colorado.

Grew up in a ranching community located in Burns Colorado.

Education: Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University in Economics, and two years of Agricultural Engineering from CSU. .
